Who was Ibn Arabi ? | Life Story of Ibn Arabi and Ertugrul

Ibn Arabi, who is better known in the Islamic world with different names such as İbn-i Arabî, İbnu’l- Arabî, Muhiddin Arabî, Muhiddin İbn Arabî, and Şeyhü’l-Ekber, . His name resurfaced and became a topic of search on the internet after his character was included in the Turkish series Diriliş Ertuğrul series. So, who is Ibn Arabi? What was his relation with Ertugrul? Let’s find out the answers.

Who is Ibn Arabi?

He was born on July 28, 1165 in the city of Murcia, which is now within the borders of Spain. His full name was Muhyiddin is Muhammed bin Ali bin Muhammed el-Arabî et-Tâî el-Hâtimî and is known by the title of Şeyhü’l Ekber. Ibn Arabi, who was born in Andalusia region of Spain. He migrated to Seville with his family at the age of 8. His family belonged to the Arab Tayy tribe.

After staying in Andalusia for a while, he went on a journey. He went to Damascus, Baghdad and Mecca and met with the well-known scholars of that time. He met with Ibn Rushd in 1182. He tells this meeting in his work. Ibn Rushd was famous for saying that knowledge will be obtained through the way of reason. The young 17-year-old Muhyiddin believed that true knowledge was not just from our minds, that such knowledge could be obtained through more inspiration and discovery.

While Arabi was in İşbiliyye (1190), he got sick and lost his ability to read. After staying in this state for two years, he went to Sebte City in 589 (Hijri) and met Ibn Jubayr, whom he said he had passed to the moral authority there. After a while, he returned to İşbiliyye.

He went to Morocco in 1196. He gained fame during his travels there. He moved back to Andalusia in 1198. He visited a sheikh named Şekkaz in the town of Bağa around Gırnata City. He says that he is the greatest person he met on the way of Sufism. He went to Mecca for the Hajj for the first time in 1199-1200. There he talked to a person named [al-Kassar] (Yunus ibnu Abi-Huseyin al-Hashimi al-Abbasid al-Kassar). After Hajj, he was found in Maghrib and then Becaye, the city of Abu Medyen. After a while he came back to Mecca and wrote his works “Ruhu’l-Kuds”, “Tacu’r-Rasul”.

He traveled to Medina, Mosul, Baghdad in 1204. He wrote “et-Tenezzululu-Mosuliyya” in Mosul. After leaving Mosul, he came to Konya. He married the widow of Sadreddin Konevî, whom he met there. While in Konya, he wrote “Risaletü’l-Envar”. He was honored and served by Selçuk Meliki. Then he went to Egypt. There he narrowly escaped execution after fatwa given by the Egyptian ulama because of his words in Futuhat-ı Mekkiye. He came back to Mecca and stayed here for a while. After traveling for a while in Baghdad and Aleppo, he came to Konya again in 612/1215. He settled in Damascus in 617. From time to time, he traveled to the surrounding cities and wrote Fusus in Damascus, which was considered to be his greatest work after the Futuhat (627/1230).

He died in Damascus at 22 R. Evvel (1239) at 638. His tomb is at the foot of Kasiyun Mountain outside of Damascus. In 1516, when Selim I made conquered Damascus, he built a shrine for Ibn Arabi.

Arabi’s writings had an immense impact throughout the Islamic world and Christian world. The universal ideas underlying his thought are of immediate relevance today. He was great inspiration and support to Ertugrul Bey. He died 1240 aged 75. After his death, Ertugrul Bey continued to draw support from Ibn Arabi, through his numerous writings, books, diaries, teachings and his other spiritual works, and through his followers.
